Finca Carmona is just down the road from the historic and beautiful city of Antigua in the volcano-clad central highlands of Guatemala. Carmona has a wet mill and drying patios on site and boasts incredible volcano views from nearly anywhere on the farm. We arrived at dusk on our first visit and immediately fell in love. Everything is filled with a kind of prideful beauty you see with quality producers. From the flowers in the well kept gardens, to the architecture of the hacienda, to the sweeping views, to the tidy mill, to the smells of rich volcanic earth, it’s obvious this beauty is captured by the stunning coffee produced here. They've even branded the coffee here: Café Pulcal, but we've chosen to name it after the farm, honoring provenance of place above all else.
Finca Carmona is owned by our producer partner Luis Pedro Zelaya's aunt Maria, but Luis Pedro expertly manages the coffee production and processing. The coffee manzanas sit at 1650 to 2000 meters above sea level, and feature very steep hillsides which allow for excellent soil drainage. This in turn keeps the soil bed drier, equalling better sugar development and less fungal infestation. After harvest, coffees are sorted and washed on site, and then sorted even further at LPZ’s Bella Vista facility just 20 mins away in Antigua, before being readied for export.
Our selection of coffee from Finca Carmona this year is of two 'day lots', which are two back to back days of harvest, towards the middle of the harvest season. this means ample selection of evenly ripe cherries for the sorting process. Taste notes from origin were of smooth dark chocolate syrup and crisp plum. Cannot wait to share this with you
